United Asian Network (UAN) and UNHCR hold Breakfast Meeting to Strengthen their Strategic Partnership to Support Refugees in Kenya

NAIROBI, KENYA | May 18, 2026 – The United Asian Network (UAN) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, convened a high-level strategic meeting today at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). The session aimed to solidify collaborative frameworks and mobilize private sector resources to support refugee and host communities across Kenya.

The discussions were led by Ms. Fatima Mohammed Cole, UNHCR Representative, and Dr. Manish Shah, representing UAN Chairman Dr. Bimal Kantaria. The dialogue focused on bridging the gap between private sector innovation and the immediate socio-economic challenges faced by displaced populations.

Key Strategic Initiatives

The partnership focuses on three critical pillars designed to foster community-led development and long-term self-reliance:

·       Health: Expanding access to specialized medical care, building on the success of the Kakuma Eye Camp. This initiative, supported by Spanish medical professionals, continues under the leadership of Dr. Manish Shah and UAN.

·       Education & Vocational Training: Launching a comprehensive upskilling program in collaboration with the CAP Youth Empowerment Institute (CAP YEI). Led by UAN Board Member Mr. PVS Rao, this program will equip refugees with essential technical, vocational, and soft skills.

o   Immediate Impact: During the meeting, Mr. PVS Rao announced an immediate donation of 500 pairs of Kenyan-made shoes for school-going children within the camps.

·       Agriculture & Sustainability: A technical expert team, headed by Dr. Bimal Kantaria, has completed a feasibility study for a major water dam project to support large-scale farming and agropreneurship. Additionally, Mr. Rao proposed the modernization of local slaughterhouses and a holistic livestock management program to enhance food security.

Leadership Quotes

"Our partnership with UAN represents a vital bridge between the private sector and humanitarian needs," stated Ms. Fatima Mohammed Cole, UNHCR Representative. "With a projected 50% reduction in traditional funding by 2033, the 'Shirika Plan' and robust private sector engagement are no longer optional—they are essential for the long-term self-reliance of refugees in Kenya."

Dr. Manish Shah emphasized the shift toward sustainable development: "The UAN is committed to moving beyond simple donations toward impactful, sustainable engagement. From youth forums to large-scale agriculture on the 50-hectare UNHCR plot, we are here to act swiftly and consistently."

UAN Trustee Mr. Hasmukh Devani advocated for rigorous oversight, noting that "projects must be measurable so that any challenges can be addressed immediately through data-driven solutions." Furthermore, Mr. Ashok Shah highlighted the importance of risk management, suggesting "the implementation of livestock insurance to provide a safety net for pastoralist communities."

The Path Forward

The meeting concluded with a firm commitment to establish a Joint Steering Committee. This body will oversee the implementation and regular monitoring of all agreed-upon initiatives to ensure transparency and momentum.

To support these efforts, UAN and UNHCR announced a series of upcoming advocacy and fundraising events:

· Awareness Drive: A community outreach event at Village Market.

· Art Weekend: A cultural showcase highlighting the talents of refugee artists.

·Gala Dinner: A flagship fundraising event to secure resources for ongoing refugee support and development projects.
